Date stamps and blank tapes

Mix tapes from friends are like photos or letters you save, to take you back in time. Like a letter, they take care to create, and there’s more of the person in the print.

Mike mailed tapes to me when he moved to Seattle and I was still on the east coast. I kept the music because it’s good, but more because it’s from him, and he took the time to share it with me.

We sat on the driveway with the garage doors open Sunday, drinking canned beer and listening to Frank Zappa. The date stamp on the tape is 20 years ago, better than any high school graduation. You can’t get that from file downloads.
