It’d been a while since I took my morning walk to the lake. I couldn’t remember the last day I did but it didn’t matter, they all ran together. Passing the birds and rabbits I wondered how it felt for them, the new day (surely different than mine, having to forage for food, to worry about dying).
I’d gone to bed at 7:30 and gotten up at 5. Lying there I thought how decadent to fall asleep when the sun’s still out. I’d checked in on Lily and asked her to get off her phone: and Charlotte, who said she’d come in with me so I could read to her…but I must have fallen asleep, or she got distracted, and it didn’t happen.
We were trying to make plans for the two of us to do something special, but she dismissed the idea of camping so I asked her to think about it. And when I asked if she had any ideas she said right away, aquarium. That was strange, but I said alright, tell me more. There’s a place where they have mermaids and you can watch them swim, she said. She found it online. I said OK, we’ll have to look into that. And then I wondered exactly what it was she found online, because swimming mermaids sounds kind of erotic.
The day ended with a vigorous rain and I opened all the windows to bring in the fresh smells, we needed it. I stood in the den looking down at the animal hair on the carpet and didn’t care. I slapped my gut, and felt happy. It was dark outside and I had the place to myself; dinner was done and cooling for when they got home.
May. The week’s half-over already, almost.
Opening the window to the rain and the fresh smells … and slapping your gut. You got me right there.

I like the gut-slapping too. We saw some swimming mermaids at the aquarium in Mertyle Beach. I wonder if it was the same ones, can’t be that many in captivity.

Ha, right! How do they mate? Sorry, let’s not go there. Mer-men.

This is a lovely experience to be shared. From my own perspective, if every child could have some moments of rest like this, their mental productivity would be enhanced towards enabling them think ahead and positively for their lives.

Those mermaids. That shtick’s been around for some time. I recall some newsreel type footage from the 40s 50s. Vegas probably. Not erotic. But now? What isn’t?

Ah, the eros in all things, to ‘err’ is human right? Yes, I think their draw goes like WAY back to nautical days, dunnit? Or to Starbucks, to the smell of coffee and ice being ground in a blender. Gets me every time. Hi Ross! Happy May to you buddy. Six more months until our birth-days.

I recall Ziggy, the bald-headed illustrated dude. Or did I totally imagine/misremember that?

My daughter wanted a mermaid tail with monofin for her birthday. They’re a drowning hazard and banned at most public pools, so I got her some flippers instead. They aren’t mermaid tails though. Mermaid are very in now.

Drowning hazards, of course! Good god, what a bad image. Our kids just stumble around the house, down the stairs in them. The material doesn’t look domestic, probably tested on animals too. Hi and happy May to you Kristen!

Weeki Wachee Springs State Park, mermaids since 1947. Most of them are quite elderly now, and don’t swim around that much. They couldn’t get any of them to do a cameo in “The Shape of Water”. Sorry, Charlie, people just want tuna that tastes good.

Wow. Home for elderly mermaids. Now that’s an SNL sketch if e’er I heard one! Ha! They should all be smoking Benson & hedges, the long ones, they’ve earned it.

She takes a long drag, and blows smoke out her gills “Yeah, chum, you think you’ll scale the ladder of success, but that’s tough with no feet, and one day, you’re all washed up. Lucky I stashed a bit offshore for a rainy day.”
