Song for reopening

The birds tweet, the crows caw, a jet roars, and the cars cut the spaces in between like the sound of the tides combing the shore. There is a siren wailing, a grass mower going, but the birds and crows continue on undisturbed. It could be like one long piece of music punctuated by the bees buzzing or the tree frogs croaking, by a delivery driver squealing his brakes. And after so long, a whole season of seasons spent indoors, it sounds like the whole world is reawakening. At least in this small corner it is. And isn’t that the world for us, our small corners? Crow, house fly, honey bee: circling the same patch of grass, gathering, bedding down. We have that much in common, at least. We share the same air.

  1. Splendid! An auditory panorama!
The world does seem to be reawakening – a bit scary, but at the same time intoxicating – tomorrow we go to Gospel Brunch (incredible musicians and delicious TexMex food) for the first time since mid-March 2020. Live music! Will feel soooo good to share that familiar air again – step back into that nook of sound, perspective, camaraderie.

    • Hey that sounds terrific Jazz! We started going to our neighborhood farmers market again a couple weeks ago, so a similar thing in a sense, that community kind of getting-out thing we’ve been without for so long. Tex-Mex is making me hungry. I’m doing a chicken sausage gumbo tonight and just got the ingredients. It’s high of 60 today and rainy and I just put the heat on, if you can believe that.

      • We’re still bracing for the usual June heat – so far rain and pretty cool (tho have not needed the heater!) I’m not sure our ecosystems are gonna reopen to old norms! (So we might’s well chow down on some yummies and take notes …)

      • Might’s well chow down: I’ll write that on my horoscope for today Jazz, thanks for that. Have a restful weekend! And have fun tomorrow at the shin-dig.

  2. It’s double doonas down under so it was nice to wake to find this in our corner of the world.

    • Double doonas sounds like a drag, like doo-doo.

      • Bill, double doonas is cozy.
I wrote that before getting up, and now write this before commencing coffee rituals.
It’s a rippa day too – no longer coughing up phlegm the colour and size of under cooked chicken nuggets.

      • Whoa! I love it, double doonas it is. Thanks for adding that to my toolkit so to speak. And for the image of the chicken nugget phlegm. Better than tadpoles I s’pose. Touche

      • Or spiders it would seem.
Anyway, I’m going to throw open the doors and run wooping with glee from ‘iso’ out back to the bedroom at the front, yelling ‘Young one!’. It’s as good as Spring.

  4. Since moving to a remote location with the constant sound of a creek just outside of the house, I have realized it is a similar white noise one would find in an urban setting. Much like a box fan or the continual rush of a freeway. I find that when I leave the window open at night, I fall asleep much faster than with it closed. I also lose the background hum quickly. When I start to wake up, the creek is silent until I am fully conscious. At that moment, it feels no different than if it were the freeway or a box fan. It is still calming.

    • I know what you mean! That is the very best. Glad you have that man, thanks for sharing. I was lucky once to leave by the sea and experienced similar with the screen doors open, man that was paradise. Nothing like it.

  6. Kaleidoscope of beauty and experiment of words in a story that touches the heart and perhaps freaks. Yet, it doesn’t freak me for I slip into the poetic verse and hymn, the passion felt and plays like theater:)
