Disintegration
I had a cassette copy of this record by The Cure (“Disintegration”), and I wrote “1989’s Disintegration” on the spine of the tape when I dubbed it. I did this to be ironic, since 1989 was the year my first major relationship ended, one that started in 1986. The album is perfectly suited for break-ups, anger, and self-absorption. All this is perfect when you’re 18 going on 19, and living in Erie, Pennsylvania. I often said the cloud cover there is so low you can feel it pressing on your shoulders.
In Munich yesterday, I realized it’s now been 20 years since this record came out. I’m going to play it while cooking dinner tonight, and I’ll subject our guests to all 75 minutes of it.
