Few things I loved more than getting up really early to go backpacking. Better if it was with a friend or deeper in the year nearing autumn. But today was best because it was happening today and just about to start. Waking a half an hour before the alarm unable to stay in bed. Not needing an alarm even. Waking so early the stars are their brightest with no moon in the yard. Waking before the cat. Then throwing the last-minute things in the car and setting the navigator by the light of the digital display. Getting up at this hour could feel ungodly but there was nothing but god in it now. A god with no name but one who gave me life just for this.

That boot looks like the tail-end of the Volvo 145 wagon that I had when Alex was in the scouts – a terrific car for lugging kids and stuff about, and for making great memories. I trust your trip will yield great memories too, Bill.

Yeah I loved that car! That’s an old photo, an even older car and a trip from way back when.

I love how much you love how much you get up so early, before the cat even. I wonder though how you do it so often, and what time of day you call it a day to these mornings happen.

I turn in sometimes around 7. Like tonight, woke in my tent at 2:30 and tried to lay there until at least 3. Man am I tired. Clocked 16 miles on the trail and drove 2 hours home, just got the dog. Half past 6 here and thinking bout bath and bed.

Predawn (and I don’t mean before getting married) I suspect you are as close to Pan as it’s possible to get. Enjoy. Don’t carry cat food.

This time I managed not to lather up in fish oil. Did see a bear this morning, but managed to scare it away. Probably smelled pretty bad too, I did.
