Waning crescent

Made plans to drive to Portland for the weekend and see my childhood friend for a night. Woke at 0330 too excited to sleep and used my phone light to pack an overnight bag: just my toothbrush and night guard, the phone charger, an extra pair of socks. Loren’s Ethiopian CDs he lent me in the spring when I last visited. Picked Black Sabbath’s 1975 Sabotage record for the ride down. Love driving long distances in the early morning when it’s just you and the truck drivers and occasional drunks on the road. Banging my head to Ozzy and slamming the steering wheel. Stopping at the same Starbucks that’s halfway and buying a sandwich, using the loo. Rolling into Portland as the working people just begin to rise and then onto Loren’s street, just me and my overnight bag.

Someone left the cheese pizza out overnight so I had that and the last of the Kringle with my coffee in the dark, thinking these are the days we live for, when we’ve got somewhere to be.

But first, a three-hour drive south as the light comes on and it’s just you and the car stereo, a life of possibilities. Old friends, the real you.
